Khagrachhari UZ chairman hurt in attack

Miscreants have beaten up an upazila parishad chairman after failing to kidnap him from Court area of the district.

Khagrachhari Sadar Upazila Parishad Chairman Chanchu Moni Chakma was attacked by a group of 5-6 young men yesterday afternoon, according to witnesses.

The attackers hit him in the head with brick chips and tried to pick him up on a motorcycle, but people saved the chairman and caught four of the suspects.

Chanchu Moni has been admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital with serious injuries, police said, adding that they were interrogating the detained suspects.

Police are trying to arrest the suspects who managed to flee, Shahadat Hossain Tito, officer-in-charge of Khagrachari Police Station, said.

Although the injured chairman is not a member of United People's Democratic Front (UPDF), the party had supported him during the upazila parishad election.

In a statement, the UPDF blamed the Jana Sanghati Samity ( JSS MN Larma) for the attack. The Jana Sanghati Samity refuted the allegation and demanded immediate arrest of the attackers.

On Thursday afternoon, a UPDF activist was shot and hacked dead in Alutila area. The UPDF blamed JSS MN Larma for the murder too.
