Kakrail Double Murder: Victim feared attack from husband

She wanted to file GD days before murder, says brother

Shamsun Nahar Karim, who along with her son was killed in her Kakrail home in the capital on Wednesday, wanted to file a general dairy with a police station against her husband and his third wife early this week for fear of attack, her younger brother said yesterday.

“My sister suspected that there might be an attack. She called me three to four days ago and expressed willingness to file a general diary, but she didn't do so due to some family issues,” Ashraf Ali told The Daily Star.

Ashraf alleged that his brother-in-law Abdul Karim, a businessman, and his third wife Sharmin Akter Mukta, 25, had a hand in the murders as his sister on occasions complained against them.

The bodies of 46-year-old Shamsun Nahar and her son Sajjadul Karim Shaon, aged about 17, were recovered by police around 6:30pm on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Ashraf last night filed a case with Ramna Police Station against Karim, Mukta, one of her brothers and several other unidentified people in connection with the double murder, said Masudur Rahman, deputy commissioner (media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

Following the murder, law enforcers took Karim, security guard of the Kakrail building Abdullah Noman and house help Rashida Begum in their custody. They also picked up Mukta from her Paltan home on Wednesday night for interrogation.

“We are probing the incident taking family feud, business rivalry and some other issues into consideration,” said DMP DC Masudur.

Preferring anonymity, another DMP official said Karim, also a film director-cum-producer, married Mukta, an actress, in 2013. He divorced his second wife. Police were trying to trace her.

“My sister was a very pious woman, but her husband used to maintain relationship with many girls. He was angry with my sister as she tried to bar him from doing immoral things,” Ashraf alleged.

Instigated by Mukta, Karim was putting pressure on Shamsun Nahar to sign a will to hand over her property to him, the victim's younger brother claimed.

Nearly a year ago, Mukta along with a few men went to the Kakrail house and beat up Shamsun Nahar, Ashraf told this correspondent.

Jakir Hossain, a tenant of the building for seven years, said he mediated between Karim and Shamsun Nahar to resolve disputes several times.

Abdul Khaleque, younger brother of Karim, said his brother started making profit from his vegetable business in the capital's Old Dhaka around 45 years ago. He invested in other businesses over the years.

“He amassed a huge property and started maintaining distance with us.”

Doctors conducted autopsies on the two bodies at the Dhaka Medical College morgue yesterday. Sources at the morgue said the mother and son were killed with sharp weapons. The bodies bore several injury marks.
