Imam hacked to death inside N'ganj mosque

A “mentally challenged” man hacked an imam to death inside a mosque in Narayanganj last night. The same man had killed the imam's wife in a similar fashion 10 years ago, said police.

The incident at Mati Mosque in Gobindapur Majhipara village of Rupganj upazila left another person injured.

Zahirul Islam, the suspect, stormed the mosque around 8:30pm when imam Abdul Majid Munshi and Habibur Miah were offering their Esha prayers, said Shahadat Hossain, in-charge of the local police camp.

He started hacking them with a sharp weapon and left being chased away by others.

Majid died on his way to Rupganj Upazila Health Complex, the OC said, adding that police were trying to catch Zahirul.
