Hit by a truck, child loses arm

A seven-year-old girl lost her left arm in a road accident at Sherua Battola in Bogra's Sherpur upazila yesterday.

The girl, Sumi, daughter of Dulal Khan of Fuldighi Dokkhinpara of the upazila, is now undergoing treatment at Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital.

Victim's paternal aunt Parul Akter said Sumi and her mother Moriom Akter were crossing Bogra-Dhaka highway around 1:30pm. At that time, a stone-laden truck was heading towards Dhaka. Seeing the truck, Moriom stopped, but Sumi could not.

The truck knocked down Sumi and her left arm got severed from the elbow.

Parul said Sumi, a kindergarten student, and her mother were going to her another aunt's home on the other side of the highway.

The victim was first taken to Sherpur Upazila Health Complex. Sumi was then moved to Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital.

Mahbubur Rahman Sarkar, registrar at the hospital, said the victim had injuries in her head, face and other parts of the body.

Nirmalendu Chowdhury, deputy director of the hospital, said as the girl had head injury and she bled heavily, they were not sure what would happen to her. After 24 hours, they could tell about her condition.

Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sherpur Police Station, said the truck and its driver were detained.

On April 4, Titumir College student Rajib Hossain, 21, lost his right arm as it got severed after it getting stuck between two buses in the city's Banglamotor area. He died of his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on April 17.
