'Gunfight' with police kills 2 'robbers'

Two alleged robbers were killed in a "gunfight" with police in the district's Matlab Uttar upazila early yesterday.

They are Habu Sardar, 30, of Laxmipur, and Mujibur Rahman, 48, of Dubgi village in Matlab Uttar upazila, said Alamgir Hossain Mazumdar, officer-in-charge of Matlab Uttar Police Station.

Acting on a tip-off that some robbers were preparing to commit a robbery in Dubgi village, police raided the area around 3:30am, the police official said.

Sensing presence of law enforcers, the criminals opened fire. Police retaliated, triggering the "gunfight" that left two robbers dead on the spot, the OC said.

Three policemen were also injured during the “gunfight” and they took first aid, he claimed.

Police also claimed to have recovered bullet shells and several sharp weapons from the spot.

The two deceased stood accused in many cases, including murder and robbery. Recently, a case was filed against the duo in connection with a jewellery shop looting in Pathan Bazar area of Matlab, police said.

Following the robbery case, police arrested four aides of the duo earlier.
