Govt taking steps to ban Chhatra Shibir

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan yesterday told a parliamentary body that his ministry was taking steps to ban Islamic Chhatra Shibir and Ansar Al Islam for anti-state, militant activities.

He informed the parliamentary standing committee on the home ministry about the matter during a meeting at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, said meeting sources.

Kamal had said the same thing during another meeting of the JS body in May.

According to the working paper of that meeting, the minister said the government had made a move to ban Shibir, a pro-Jamaat-e-Islami body, and Ansar Al Islam.

The working paper was approved at the meeting yesterday.

The government has long been saying that it will ban Jamaat which actively opposed Bangladesh's birth during 1971 Liberation War.

The International Crimes Tribunal, while delivering at least three verdicts, said Jamaat “functioned as a criminal organisation” during the war.
