Govt 'strongly considering' MPO for more institutions

Nahid tells parliament

The government is “strongly considering” the inclusion of a number of educational institutions in the Monthly Payment Order scheme, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said in parliament yesterday.

The minister made the statement in response to a private member's resolution placed by MA Maleque from Dhaka-20 in the House.

“The government has a plan to include a number of educational institutions in the MPO scheme as soon as possible," Nahid said.

The government has made the move as per the PM's directives and assurance from the finance minster, he added.

The PM on January 5 gave assurance of meeting the demands of the teachers of non-MPO educational institutions, who had gone on a hunger strike in front of the Jatiya Press Club on December 31. They called off the strike upon the PM's assurance.

Yesterday, Nahid said his ministry already started working to bring some educational institutions under the MPO scheme.

The minister further said it would not be right “strategically” to disclose in the House all the information regarding the issue.
