Govt asks BTRC to start re-registration of SIMs

The government in a letter yesterday asked Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission to take immediate steps to start the re-registration process of all mobile phone connections.

“We need to go for re-registration of all subscribers; otherwise we won't be able to know the number of genuine subscribers,” said Tarana Halim, state minister for telecom.

On Sunday, in a meeting with the law enforcement agencies, the government decided to have all mobile phone users re-registered by this year to prepare a database of subscribers, and control criminal activities through cellular networks.

However, BTRC's outgoing chairman Sunil Kanti Bose told journalists yesterday that there was no need to go for re-registration of SIMs that have been registered properly at the time of purchase.
