Gaibandha girl hospitalised after 'rape'

Her condition critical, doctors say

A man allegedly raped a teenage girl at Sreerampur village in Sadullapur upazila, on Wednesday afternoon.

Quoting family sources, police said the girl, 15, was attacked while she was feeding goats at a paddy field near her home at around 5:00pm. Suddenly, the accused, Sujon Mia, 27, grabbed her from behind, tied her face with a scarf and dragged her to an adjacent cane field where he “raped” her.

Hearing her screams, locals came to rescue her but Sujon had already fled the scene. When they found the victim, she was bleeding profusely. She was taken to her home, after which she went to Sadullapur Police Station where she accused Sujon of the rape.

Later, as her condition deteriorated, she was taken to Gaibandha Sadar Hospital at 10:00pm.

The victim's grandmother filed a case against Sujon Mia under the Women and Child Repression Prevention Act with Sadullapur Police Station at 11:00pm.

According to locals, Sujon used to frequently harass women in the area.

Emranul Kabir, office-in-charge (Investigation) of the station, said the police were trying to arrest him.

Speaking to The Daily Star yesterday at 11:00am, Afroza Sultana, on-duty physician of Gaibandha Sadar Hospital, said the victim's condition was still critical due to massive blood loss.
