Formation of new BCL committee to take more time

Say leaders of the student body after a meeting with Sheikh Hasina

The formation of the much-awaited new committee of Bangladesh Chhatra League would take some more time, two BCL leaders said last night after a meeting between Awami League President Sheikh Hasina and the aspirants for the committee posts.

She would announce the committee after scrutinising personal details of the aspirants, they said.

Prime Minister Hasina held the four-and-a-half-hour meeting with 323 aspirants for the posts of the the president and the general secretary of the pro-AL student organisation at the Gono Bhaban.

At the meeting, starting from 7:00pm, Hasina asked the leaders whether they themselves would pick their leaders through “negotiation”.

The leaders replied that they were waiting for Hasina to come up with an announcement to this end, said meeting sources.

The PM then wanted to know whether the BCL leaders would accept the president and the general secretary to be chosen by her, said one of the president candidates, wishing not to be named.

In reply, all the leaders said “Yes”, he said.

Later, Hasina told the meeting that she would announce the new committee after verifying personal details of the aspirants and the process would take some time.

She also urged the BCL leaders to work together for the candidates, to be nominated by the AL, in the upcoming national elections, likely to be held in December.

The 29th council of the BCL was held on May 11-12. However, the organisation has not yet announced its new committee.

Earlier, Hasina had asked BCL leaders to select new leaders through “negotiation”. Accordingly, some former and current BCL leaders held a meeting on May 12 but could not reach consensus on the issue.
