Dncc By-polls: BNP-led alliance to nominate single mayor candidate

The BNP-led 20-party alliance would nominate a single mayoral candidate for the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) by-polls.

The decision was made at a meeting of the chiefs of the alliance components at BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's Gulshan office last night.

In the two-hour-long meeting with Khaleda in the chair, the leaders also discussed the country's latest political situation, next general election and their next course of action regarding the election, meeting sources said.

The main agenda of the meeting was the DNCC polls. A Jamaat leader who was present in the meeting said although one of its leaders expressed interest in running for mayor, the decision of Khaleda will be final.

“Jamaat will work for the mayoral candidate finalised by the 20-party alliance chief [Khaleda Zia],” a top leader of the alliance quoted a Jamaat leader as saying.

The meeting also talked about the ongoing case proceedings against Khaleda. The alliance leaders said there would be no election without Khaleda. “We will not participate in any election without the BNP chief.”
