Criminals kill AL leader in Narail

Unidentified criminals shot and hacked to death a union parishad chairman in Lohagora upazila town of Narail yesterday.

The victim, Latifur Rahman Palash, 48, of Kumri village, was also the labour affairs secretary of Lohagora upazila unit Awami League.

Quoting witnesses, police said four to five criminals opened fire on Latifur when he and a member of his union were going to Sonali Bank's Laxmipasha branch by a motorcycle. The attackers also stabbed him indiscriminately when Latifur fell on the ground.

Latifur, chairman of Dighlia Union Parishad, reached the office of upazila nirbahi officer to attend a meeting around noon. Before beginning of the meeting, he was going to the bank for his personal work. When Latifur reached near the upazila Settlement office around 12:30pm, the criminals attacked him.

Latifur was rushed to Lohagora Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.

Lohagora upazila unit AL brought out a procession in the town, protesting the killing of Latifur and demanding punishment of his killers.

The body was sent to Narail Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy, said Shafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Lohagora Police Station.

Shafiqul might have been killed over internal party feuds, the OC said.

Additional police have been deployed in different villages of Dighlia Union Parishad to fend off any untoward incident.

A case was filed with Lohagora Police Station.
