Alleged criminal killed in Laxmipur

An alleged criminal was killed in a "gunfight" between police and his cohorts at Makardhos village in Sadar upazila of Laxmipur yesterday morning.

The deceased was identified as Tareq Hossain, 32, a member of criminal gang 'Bashar Bahini' and son of Abdur Shukur alias Siraj Miah, a resident of the same village.

Acting on a tip off, a team of police conducted a drive in Makardhos area to arrest Tareq when he along with his associates was present there around 3:00am, Assistant Superintendent of Police Mohammad Junayet Kawser said.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, associates of Tareq opened fire on them, forcing the police personnel to retaliate and trigging a "gunfight", the police official said.

Tareq was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot, while his associates managed to escape, he added.

Police also recovered one light gun and six rounds of bullet from the spot.
