Cox's Bazar civil body wants fund to restore environment
Places 6-point memo before visiting UNSC members
Civil Society and NGO Forum of Cox's Bazar yesterday demanded formation of an environmental recovery fund as the district faced massive ecological damage due to the influx of around 700,000 Rohingyas.
“We have already lost a lot of natural resources, including forest. Underground water level is depleting fast in Cox's Bazar,” reads a memo that was placed before the visiting UN Security Council members at a hotel at Inani in Ukhia.
Civil Society and NGO Forum Co-Chairman Abu Morshed Chowdhury handed over the six-point memo to Joanna Wronecka, permanent representative of Poland to the UN.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam and UN Resident Coordinator Mia Seppo were also present.
Morshed said they also demanded implementing ways of cutting management cost in the Rohingya assistance programme and increasing participation of locals.
Other demands include holding accountable the perpetrators of ethnic cleansing of Rohingyas and imposing economic and arms sanctions on Myanmar.
The UNSC should do everything to ensure citizenship of the Rohingya in Myanmar and their sustainable repatriation to their places of origin, not to the camps, it said.
