CMP detains 200 'Jamaat, Shibir' men

Chittagong Metropolitan Police detained around 200 alleged leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Chhatra Shibir in Kotwali area of the port city last night.

Police did not say exactly why they were held.

The detainees had gathered at a hotel to attend a clandestine meeting around 9:00pm, Jahangir Alam, assistant commissioner of CMP (Kotwali circle), told The Daily Star.

Acting on a tip-off, police raided the hotel, run by Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation, and detained them, he said.

Mostain Hossain, deputy commissioner of CMP (south) said though the detainees claimed that they had gathered for an Eid reunion, police had information about the “secret meeting of around 200 Jamaat-Shibir men”.

Further details of the incident were not available immediately.
