A boy was injured when a crude bomb he had picked up exploded in the capital's Madhya Badda area around 1:00pm yesterday.

Robiul Islam, 10, a madrasa student, received splinter injuries in the explosion and was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), Inspector Mojammel Haque, in-charge of DMCH police camp, told The Daily Star.

Robiul sustained injuries in his right hand and right eye.

He found the bomb, which looked like a taped tennis ball, in Post Office alley near his home in Madhya Badda. He started playing with it, Mojammel said, adding that at one stage the bomb exploded in his hands.

Robiul's mother Ankhi Begum, a garment factory worker, said she was at work when the incident took place. She had left Robiul and her younger sister home when she left for work.

His father Faruk Hossain, who is a driver, was also out at work.

Faruk told The Daily Star that the doctors had to amputate one of his fingers and that they would let Faruk know today about the condition of Robiul's injured eye.

Robiul was playing with another boy named Sharif when the bomb exploded.

Sharif sustained minor injuries.
