BCL activist killed in infighting

A Chhatra League activist was stabbed to death in an internal clash over previous enmity in the district's Ukhia upazila early yesterday.

The dead, Mohammad Shahin, 20, was the son of Mohammad Kalu of Foliapara village. He was an HSC second-year student of Ukhia Degree College.

Witnesses said around 1:00am, some criminals, led by local BCL leader Jahangir Alam, swooped on Shahin when he along with his friends was returning from a handloom and textile fair held at Ukhia High School.

The two groups then were locked in a clash, they said, adding that at one stage, Jahangir stabbed Shahin with a sharp weapon and fled the scene.

Critically injured Shahin was rushed to Ukhia Upazila Health Complex. Doctors referred him to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital. Shahin died on the way to the hospital.

However, despite repeated attempts over phone, this correspondent could not reach Jahangir for his comments in this regard.

Syed Mohammad Noman, president of Ukhia upazila Chhatra League, said Shahin was an active BCL activist. Jahangir is a former joint convener of Ukhia Degree College unit BCL, pro-Awami League student body.

As tension prevailed in Ukhia upazila headquarters following the incident, additional police were deployed there to avoid further untoward incident.

After autopsy, the body of Shahin was handed over to his family.

Habibur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Ukhia Police Station, said the incident of killing happened over previous enmity between the two groups.
