Bamboos instead of iron rods have been used in constructing a wall of Bandarban Government Women College's academic building extension work.

Talking to this correspondent on the spot yesterday evening, Ali Hossain, a construction worker, said, “We are using the bamboos on instructions from contractors -- Ujjal Das and Taposh Das.”

Contacted, Ujjal Das, a contractor of the project and also a leader of ruling Awami League, denied the allegation and claimed that they never told the workers to use bamboo.

Ujjal, however, apologised for the incident.

The work was a project of Chittagong Hill Tracts Development Board (CHTDB).

Asked, Pradip Barua, principal of the college, declined to comment, but said he informed the executive engineer of CHTDB Bandarban unit of the incident.

Abdul Aziz, the executive engineer, said, “I already stopped the work, and action will be taken against those involved in the incident."
