Anarchy over grenade attack verdict won’t be tolerated: DMP chief

Hours ahead of the delivery of the verdicts in two cases filed over the grisly grenade attack on an Awami League rally, Police Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia today said law enforcers will not tolerate any kind of anarchy centring the verdict.

All are equal in the eyes of law, the DMP commissioner said adding anyone who breaks the law and tries to create anarchy will be brought to the justice.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) chief was talking to journalists while visiting the court premises in Old Dhaka to observe the overall security measures taken by his department. 

Police have taken all sorts of preparation to provide security to the people and the city, he said.

A special tribunal is set to deliver the verdicts in two cases over the attack.

The attack, carried out to assassinate then opposition leader Sheikh Hasina on August 21, 2004, left 24 people killed, mostly AL leaders and activists, and over 300 others injured. Hasina survived with injuries to her ears.

The verdicts, to be delivered 14 years after the blasts on Bangabandhu Avenue, are likely to further heat up the political landscape ahead of the national election as several BNP leaders, including BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman, are accused in the cases.

Fates of the then top police and intelligence officers accused in the cases will also be known this morning
