India, China agree to stop sending more troops to frontline in Ladakh

India and China have agreed to stop sending more troops to the frontline in Ladakh and refrain from unilaterally changing the situation on the ground.

The two sides also "agreed to earnestly implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, strengthen communication on the ground, avoid misunderstandings and misjudgments and avoid taking any actions that may complicate the situation," said a joint statement issued by the Indian Defence Ministry tonight after the sixth round of senior military commander-level talks on Monday.

The two sides also agreed to hold the next round of military commander-level meeting as soon as possible, but did not announce any date.

The statement said the two countries also agreed to "take practical measures to properly solve problems on the ground and jointly safeguard peace and tranquility in the border area."

During the sixth round of meeting, the two sides "had candid and in-depth exchanges of views on stabilising the situation" along the Line of Control in India - China border areas.

Two Indian lieutenant generals and a joint secretary from the Indian external affairs ministry were among the officers who took part in Monday's talks.
