Working with the elements around

Artwork of Syed Muhammad Zakir; the artist in performance (below).

Syed Muhammad Zakir, a visual artist, expresses his feelings through contemporary art. Born in Rangpur, he started practising art when he was enrolled at the Department of Sculpture, Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka in 1995. He participated in different collaborative performance art shows and performed in more than a dozen solo events.

“I love to work with common people,” says Zakir. “Which is why, my working arenas are the public places, parks, walls and streets. The enthusiastic spectators become part of my work.”

Zakir predominantly works in public places incorporating the general population and neighbouring environment. He has so far created an individual identity in live or performance art, installation art, wall painting and drawings. He uses strong lines in his drawings to represent a singular time and form. Bright and metallic colours are noticeable in his artwork.

Zakir's live art evokes satire as he uses pantomime, which are also associated with philosophical quests. The Dhaka-based artist also has a passion for site-specific landscaping art.

One can even say, that some of the most intriguing elements of this universe are apparent in his work -- soul-searching questions, human desires, the mystery of the universe and the cosmic journey.
