“Sampan Naiya” and “Putulnatya” staged at RU

Two plays, "Sampan Naiya" and "Putulnatya", were staged at Rajshahi University (RU) auditorium last week.

Two troupes, Chattogram-based Uttaradhikar and Bangladesh Putul Natya Gobeshona O Unnayan Kendra respectively staged the plays on the third day of the week-long 'Bangladesh-India alliance theatre Festival-2018' at Rajshahi University campus.

The theatre department of the university, in association with Indian High Commission to Bangladesh organised this weeklong festival. Ten troupes from Bangladesh and three Indian troupes are staging their plays at two venues during the festival.

Bangladesh Putul Natya Gabeshana O Unnayan Kendra staged its production "Putulnatya" at the university's Shaheed Sukhoranjan Samaddar Teacher Student Cultural Centre (TSCC) in the afternoon. The play was compiled and directed by Dr Rashid Harun. Based on Bande Ali Miya's story "Kormofol" and Masuma Al Baby's "Hati o Bang", the play features the story of a grandmother and her grandson who are puppeteers. They make a living doing puppet shows. The story showed ups and downs of their life at different stages.

In the evening on the same day, Uttaradhikar staged their play "Sampan Naiya" at the Kazi Nazrul Islam Auditorium.

"Sampan Naiya" was written by Aminur Rahman Mukul and directed by Moslehuddin Sikdar. The story of this play features the life and struggles of fishing communities living in the southern part of Chattogram. The story centres round Nasar, who dreams of building a discrimination-free ideal society.

The festival opened on April 1, and ends today.
