Pabna Drama Circle stages - Shylock and Sycophants

A three-day theatre festival organised by Pabna Drama Circle -- a leading theatre group of the district -- concluded on Sunday. The play "Shylock and Sycophants"was staged in Pabna Edward College auditorium on the opening day of the festival. 

Following the novel of Shahzad Fardous, the play focuses on the destructive impact of corporate development in the society. 

In their quest for prosperity, modern men have lost their innocence, and are running blindly after materialistic success, and that is reverberated in the play, said Mostafizur Rahman Russel, actor/director of the play and also the secretary of Pabna Drama Circle. 

Dramatist Dolon Aziz and Russel directed the play while among other artistes -- Mehedi Hassan, Kamrunnahar Mukta, Barkat Ullah Shimul, Shihan Islam, Shishir Islam performed. This is the 43rd production of Pabna Drama Circle. 

A discussion also took place on the occasion. Head of Social Science department of Pabna Edward College, Shahid Md. Ibrahim inaugurated the festival as chief guest while professor Shawkat Ali Khan, dramatist Gonesh Das, Faruk Hossain Chowdhury spoke on the occasion. 

Focusing on the heritage of theatre, speakers stressed to keep up the tradition. "Performance on theatre lies in the origin of performance. But theatre is dying out due to the satellite culture," the speakers said.
