JU's week-long theatre festival begins

54 eminent personalities to be honoured

The grand cultural theatre festival titled "Muktishangram Nattoushab-2017", organised by Teachers-Student Centre (TSC) of Jahangirnagar University (JU), began on March 25 on the campus amid festivity and fanfare.

Marking Independence and National Day 2017, JU authorities chalked out an elaborate programme while they also demanded a swift implementation of the process to observe March 25 as Genocide Day in memory of the victims of the atrocities unleashed by the Pakistan occupation forces on this day in 1971.

With the theme "Muktir Aloy Alokito Kori Bhuban", JU authorities are organising the week-long programme to focus on the rich culture, heritage, history and future economic prospects of Bangladesh as well as branding its own culture at home and abroad.

A total of 54 eminent and distinguished personalities will be honoured and around six plays will be stagedin the programme.

Freedom fighter Taramon Bibi Bir Protik inaugurated the week long programme by hoisting the national flag while the country's first woman Vice Chancellor Professor Farzana Islam was present and chairs all the sessions.

Among the eminent personalities to be honored posthumously are Tajuddin Ahmed, the first prime minister of Bangladesh; Natyacharya Selim Al Deen; Shaheed Janani Jahanara Imam; ex-JU student and actor Humayun Faridi; litterateur Syed Shamsul Haq; JU former-teacher Professor Syed Shafiullah.

Others to be honoured are- Speaker of Jatiya Sangsad Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury; JU VC Professor Farzana Islam; actor Mamunur Rashid; Dr Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir; former foreign minister Dr. Dipu Moni; the  country's first city woman Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy; eminent actress and social activist Sara Zaker; sculptor Jahanara Pervin among others.

The programmes will feature art camps on liberation war, tree plantation, photography, painting exhibitions, theatre festival, and presentation on history, musical evening, discussions, and recitation.

The festival, celebrating the indomitable spirit of the liberation war, will highlight stories of courage to inspire youth. The concluding ceremony of the festival will be held at Selim Al Deen Muktamanchha on March 31.
