Greek tragedy King Oedipus staged at JKKNIU

The students of Theatre and Performance Studies Department of Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University (JKKNIU) in Trishal staged Sophocles' famous Greek tragedy " King Oedipus" at the campus on Wednesday evening.

This was the maiden staging of the play on the campus, according to sources.

Some 80 students of the department's seventh batch performed in  the play held at the premises of university's central library. In the four choruses of the play, 33 artistes took part.

Planned and directed by lecturer Mazharul Hossain Tokder, the 50-minute play was staged as part of the students' preparation for their examinations, said Mazharul.

"We staged the play in 'environmental theatre style' as the central library premises gives the taste of a royal residence, said the director.

Abid Sheikh and Shihab Sajib played the role of Oedipus, the king of Thebes; Nafisa and Hira acted for Jocasta, the Queen of Thebes; while Mohaimeen Dipu for Tiresias.

Vice-chancellor of the university Prof Mohit Ul Alam was the chief guest while president of Natyakala Department of Rajshahi University Dr Ataur Rahman and Dr Mir Mehbub Alam, an eminent director enjoyed the play as special guests.

Praising the brilliant performance of the artistes, the speakers said that through the staging of the world famous Greek tragedy the students revealed their excellent acting skills.
