Drishtipat to stage “Raja Himadri” today

Theatre troupe Drishtipat will stage the 40th show of their acclaimed play "Raja Himadri" this evening at 7pm at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) in the capital.

Dr. Khandakar Tazmi Noor has adapted, directed and played the protagonist for the play. The director converted the characters, place and the plot of the Greek tragedy "Oedipus" to give it a sub-continental touch, suiting to the contemporary local audience. The storyline, however, remains the same. While the oft-read story of "Oedipus" circles around King Oedipus and his wife/mother Jocasta, "Raja Himadri" only focuses on the Himalayan ruler.

The plot: King Himadri and his wife Himrani live happily together until a stranger arrives one day and discloses Himadri's dark secret. The secret opens a bleak chapter in the royal couple's lives and finally separates them.

The cast includes Marjana Barkatun Borsha, Abdul Halim Aziz, Jahangir Kabir Bokul, Mrinmoy Chakraborty, Abul Hossain Ador, Shreya Khandakar and Rafiqul Islam.

Tazmi Noor adapted the play from a Bangla translation by Shambhu Mitra. Junayed Usuf has designed the set and light, while accomplished Indian musician Durbadal Chattopadhyay composed the music for the production. "Raja Himadri" is the 21st production by the troupe.
