“We need to act responsibly in these trying times” – Asaduzzaman Noor
Freedom fighter and Former Cultural Minister Asaduzzaman Noor began his journey as an actor with theatre, after the Liberation War. The thespian has acted in numerous hit productions in theatre, films and television, winning different accolades, including the Independence Day Award. Kothao Keu Nei and Bohubrihi, two of his most popular serials, are currently rerunning on Bangladesh Television (BTV). He won critical and public acclaim with his iconic role as Baker Bhai in Kothao Keu Nei. The actor shares what he has been up to in a candid chat with The Daily Star.
Two of your most critically acclaimed television serials, Kothao Keu Nei and Bohubrihi, are back on BTV. Tell us a little about your experiences of working on these shows.
BTV was one of the most popular channels across the country. Back in the day, streets would go empty around the time that Kothao Keu Nei and Bohubrihi aired. Tui Razakar, the line from Bohubrihi, and Kothao Keu Nei's Baker Bhai have earned a place in the hearts of the audience. Humayun Ahmed stood out from other directors and writers because his stories were not only compelling, but also carried messages. I believe that these shows will make people's isolation days at home a little more enjoyable.
How have you been in these past few weeks?
Even though I am perfectly healthy, I have been feeling low since the past few days. It is worrying to see the whole world be exposed to a deadly disease like the COVID-19. I am concerned about the safety of my people. I hope that this time passes and we can get back to some normalcy soon.
How are you spending your time at home?
I have been reading a lot, and watching my favourite television shows. I just finished reading Kolkatar Ratri Rahasya by Hemendra Kumar Roy and a book by Muntasir Mamun on Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. I also enjoy poetry by Shamsur Rahman and Jibanananda Das at times. Now that I have a lot of free time, I have decided to finish reading all the books that I bought from the Ekushey Boi Mela this year.
As a Member of Parliament, what are your opinions about how to help the ones currently in distress?
We need to act responsibly in these trying times. I have visited several places last week, including Jatrabari, with my peers from Bangladesh Shommelito Shangskritik Jote. I am also supervising the food distribution process at Nilphamari over the phone from my residence. I feel a double sense of responsibility towards the people of my country, as a Member of Parliament and an actor. I will try to fulfill my duties to the best of my abilities.
