The country will observe the 43rd death anniversary of Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin today. The artist, born in Mymensingh, was influenced greatly by the picturesque views by the Brahmaputra River. He was a post-auratic painter, and was known as the founding father of Bangladeshi modern art. Abedin’s paintings on the Bengal Famine of 1943 brought him international fame. The Government Institute of Arts and Crafts (now Faculty of Fine Arts) was established in 1948 under his wing, and he was appointed as the first principal of the institution. He founded Bangladesh’s Folk Art Museum at Sonargaon in 1975.
