‘Roktokorobi’ staged by Prangonemor after a year

Prangonemor staged Tagore’s allegorical play Roktokorobi at Mahila Samity recently. This play is the fourth production of the popular troupe, who staged this drama after a year. The play was directed by Nuna Afroz, who also played the role of the protagonist named Nandini.

The play has a metaphoric vision, which portrays the times of British Empire and the domination over the locals, shown through the king of Jokkhopuri and his slaves who work in gold mines. They serve the king, and in return, receive nothing but inhuman torture.

One day, a girl named Nondini comes in search of her love, Ranjan. Nandini, the protagonist and also a rebel, charms everyone around her with her colourful personality. Even the king, Makar Raj, also desires her. However, he snatches the Nandini’s love by killing Ranjan, a rebellious slave.  

Colours are used to great effect in order to portray situations in the play. The red flower Roktokorobi, in one hand, is a metaphor of love and passion, and on the other, it also depicts aggression and revenge.

The cast of the play are as follows - Nuna Afroz, Ananta Hira, Ramiz Razu, Shishir Rahman, Sarwar Saikat and others.
