Revisiting ‘Kabori Road’

Kobori Road was officially recognised by the administration in 2017.

Kabori Road, a street located in the town of Chuadanga, has been around for 47 years. Named after legendary actor Sarah Begum Kabori, there was no official recognition of the name 'Kabori Road 'by the state until 2017.

In 1969, the Razzak-Kabori starrer film "Kakhagaghaunoh" was shot in Chuadanga. The entire cast and crew of the film had to stay at a house called Setab Manzil in Chuadanga city. Thus, the road around the house started going by the name 'Kabori Road'.

The film was shot by the late Baby Islam with his cousin Morshed Ahmed as his assistant. He was filming in his hometown Chuadanga to reduce the cost of shooting. The film, directed by Narayan Ghosh Mita, was released in 1972 and the house had started being addressed as Kabori Mess.

On November 30, 2016, Prothom Alo published a report titled 'Chuadangar Shangskritik Chorcha O Kabori Roader Golpo' by Shahed Muhammad Ali, where they quoted many involved with the history of this road, including Kabori. She expressed her wish to revisit that location, but the name 'Kabori Road' was not officially recognised by the government yet.

In this situation, the author then contacted the then-mayor of Chuadanga municipality, Obaidur Rahman Chowdhury, and requested him to name the road administratively. Based on this, an administrative recognition of Kabari Road was proposed in the meeting of the Municipal Council in December 2016. In February 2017, the municipality officially named the street 'Kabori Road'.

The heart-throb of the 60's and 70's Bangladeshi silver screen passed away yesterday at the capital's Sheikh Russel National Gastroliver Institute & Hospital. She was 70. The National Award-winning actor had recently tested positive for Covid-19 and was undergoing treatment.
