In remembrance of the iconic S D Burman

Sachin Dev Burman was born on October 1, 1906, in the royal family of Tripura. He infused the refined rusticity of the land into his soulful music.

In Kolkata, the musician learned G F Han and Sebastian Bach's music. He understood that the language of music is universal, and was simple in his approach -- a trait that made him universally beloved.

The former English station director of AIR advised him to learn playing the piano. He learnt it from an Anglo-Indian piano teacher, Elvin Sen, of Park Street. There, he came across Satyajit Ray, and invited him to sing for him. Ray informed him that it was not his cup of tea.

S D Burman liked a musical group of Chittagonian women so much that he used their music in thandi hawaye lehrake aye, written by Sahir Ludhianvi  for the film, Naujawan.

In Kagaz ke Phool, starring Waheeda Rahman, S D  Burman teamed up with director Guru Dutt. He composed the song, Waqt ney kiya kya hasin sitam, sung by Lata Mangeshkar. His song, Tum na jane kis Jahan me kho gaye, from the film, Sazaa, is fluidly poetic. 


The artiste lent his magnificent voice to  Ore majhi mere majhi mere sajan hai uspar, from the film, Bandini, among many others.

S D Burman's Hai apna dil to awara' from Solva Saal, is still remembered by the audience.

He passed away on October 31, 1975, in Bombay.
