Mubinul Azim

Today marks the 41st death anniversary of renowned painter Mubinul Azim, who made an immense contribution to the field of experimental paintings. Azim, who graduated in Fine Arts from University of Dhaka in 1955, was known for his hardworking and reflective nature.  As a second-year university student, he was involved in the Language Movement in 1952. He had organised a meeting in protest of the firing on the rally on February 21. He produced many posters and paintings on the Language Movement during that period.

Azim spent several years in Karachi, where besides immersing himself in painting, he taught at an art institute before returning to Dhaka for good after the Liberation War. Recognised as a naturist and figurative painter, natural elements and colours were predominant elements of his works. Throughout his career, Azim held 17 solo exhibitions in the country and abroad. He also took part in 37 group art exhibitions. After his demise, two exhibitions in honour of him were held at Dhaka Club (in 1976) and Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (in 1998).

In 2012, he was posthumously awarded Ekushey Padak for his outstanding contribution to Bangladeshi art.
