In memory of Kazi Nazrul Islam and Promila Devi

To protect the memories of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam and his wife, Promila Devi, speakers demanded the establishment of a university and the Nazrul-Promila Institute at Promila Devi’s birthpalace of Teota village, in Manikganj, at a discussion on Saturday.

The Manikganj district administration organised the programme at the Teota Zamindar Palace, to mark the 120th birth anniversary of Kazi Nazrul Islam.

Professor Niranjan Adhikari of the Department of Culture of University of Dhaka was the keynote speaker, and the deputy commissioner of Manikganj, SM Ferdous, was the chief guest. Shibalaya Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) AFM Firoz Mahmud presided over the function.

Associate professor of the Department of History of Jahangirnagar University, Dr Sultana Akter, spoke in detail about the origins of Promila Devi at the programme. President of Nazrul Promila Gobeshana Parishad, Atikur Rahman, also spoke. Headmaster of Teota Academy, Mozammel Haque, said that the government should establish a university in Teota village, in memory of Kazi Nazrul Islam and Promila Devi. 

Deputy Director of Nazrul Academy, poet Rezuddin Stalin, said that Kazi Nazrul was not only a poet of revolution and humanity. “He was also a poet of time. His creativity carried the motive to stand beside people and against wrong activities,” said Stalin.

Professor Niranjan Adhikary said that Kazi Nazrul Islam was a scholar in every branch of literature and that many of his poems, songs, ghazals and essays are of great importance. Afterwards, a cultural function was held, during which people rendered songs and recited poems.
