Many happy returns to Shabana

Today marks the birthday of celebrated actor and ten-time National Film Award winner Shabana, who won the hearts of millions ever since she stepped into films. Born as Afroza Sultana Ratna in Chittagong in 1952, she changed her name when she came into the industry. Shabana began her career in the 60s as a child artiste.

In 1967, she made her debut as a lead actor in the film, Chakori, opposite Pakistani artiste Nadim. The hit film was directed by eminent filmmaker Ehtesham.

Over the decades, Shabana has been a part of commercially successful films such as Bhat De, Obujh Mon, Chhutir Ghonta, Shottyo Mittha, Ranga Bhabi, Ora Egarojon, Matir Ghor, Lutera, Shami Keno Ashami, Mayer Doa and many others.

The actor has worked with the likes of Razzak, Farooque and Jashim, in different genres of films, including romantic and social dramas. Shabana and Alamgir are considered one of the most popular silver screen pairs till date.

In her illustrious career, Shabana worked in nearly three hundred films, including Chhando Hariye Gelo, which was a huge hit with the audiences upon its release in the 70s.

SS Productions, Shabana's production house that she formed in partnership with her husband, Wahid Sadique, has produced several excellent films. The film, Matir Ghor, starring Shabana opposite Razzak, was her first venture into production.

Shabana was last seen in the 1997 film Ghore Ghore Juddho. In 2000, she settled permanently in the US. She is known to pay yearly visits to Bangladesh.
