Looking back at Subir Nandi’s classics
Eminent singer Subir Nandi was an iconic figure in the Bangladeshi music industry and will forever remain immortal through his songs. He is credited with recording over 2,500 songs.
His popular numbers, including Tumi Emoni Jaal Petecho Shongshare, Amar Ei Duti Chokh Pathor To Noi, Bondhu Hote Cheye, Brishtir Kachh Theke, Hazar Moner Kachhey, Koto Je Tomake Besechi Bhalo, Paharer Kanna, Sei Duti Chokh, Keno Bhalobasha Hariye Jay, Bondhu Tor Barat Niya, Pakhire Tui, Ekta Chhilo Sonar Konna, and O Amar Ural Ponkhire have inspired generation of musicians and music lovers over the years. He did playback singing for several films, starting with Surja Grahan in 1974. Some other notable films that he sang for include Mahanayak (1984), Simana Periye (1985), Ammajan (1999), Srabon Megher Din (1999), Megher Opare Megh (2004), Shudha (2004) and Shasti (2006). One of the biggest hits of Subir Nandi’s career, Din Jaye Kotha Thake, a timeless song from a film of the same title, is a composition that will continue to ignite passion far beyond the singer’s time.
Apart from film scores and modern Bangla songs, Subir Nandi sang Nuzrul songs on radio quite regularly in the 80s. His immense contribution to the music industry earned him several awards, including the Ekushey Padak and the National Film Award. He also received the BACHSAS Award four times.
Since the beginning of his career, Subir Nandi collaborated with most of the music directors of our country. He worked with eminent composers like Alauddin Ali, Pradeep Saha, Satya Saha, Samar Das, Sheikh Saadi Khan, and Alam Khan.
Among others, he also worked with the musical stars from the younger generation like Habib Wahid, S I Tutul, Bappa Mazumder, Emon Saha, Shouquat Ali Imon and Kabir Bokul. He sang duets with his contemporary female artistes like Runa Laila, Sabina Yasmin, Shahnaz Rahmatullah, Ferdousi Rahman, Kanak Chapa and others.
The legendary artiste passed away recently at the age of 66, ending an illustrious career that spanned five decades.
