Largest fiberglass sculpture in Bangladesh honours Bangabandhu’s 7th March speech

In celebration of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's 73rd birthday, the Bangladesh National Museum (BNM), in collaboration with Hashumoni's Pathshala, recently organised an art exhibition. The event features paintings and sculptures from artists around the nation. It was inaugurated in the presence of K M Khalid, State Minister of Cultural Affairs, on September 28.

The event was also virtually attended by the chief guest, Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Speaker of the National Parliament. The exhibition features 74 paintings and seven sculptures. All of the sculptures are crafted by renowned artist Uttam Ghosh.

Although all of the paintings are on exhibit inside the BNM, the main attraction of the event is elsewhere. At the entrance of the museum in Shahbag, stands a 12 feet fiberglass sculpture of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Made from the threads of glass, fiberglass is created by forcing molten glass through a sieve that spins it into threads.

This sculpture, weighing 4 tonnes, is the largest of its kind in Bangladesh. It encapsulates one of the most glorious moments in our nation's history – Bangabandhu's speech on March 7, 1971. It took Ghosh eight months to complete it.

More of the artist's sculptures are currently in the works. Ghosh further informed The Daily Star that his sculpture of Bangabandhu will stay on display at the BNM premises.
