First international conference on Current Literary Theories and Jibanananda Das concludes at BU

A first of its kind, the day-long international conference, ‘Current Literary Theories and Jibanananda Das’ was held recently at Jibanananda Das Conference Complex of Barishal University (BU).

Dr Muhammad Muhsin Uddin, director of Jibanananda Research Centre, Dean of Arts faculty, presided over the first session, attended by Dr A K M Mahbub Hasan, acting Vice Chancellor of BU as chief guest. Dr Fakrul Alam, from the department of English at Dhaka University, was guest of honour at the session.

After the tea break, Dr Fakrul Alam presided over the session while K Ahmed Alam, Kazi Ashraf Uddin and Md Imran Hossain presented their respective papers -- Looking at Jibanananda Das’ Poem Haye Chil Through a Formalist Lens; Locating the Sublime and the Real in Jibanananda Das’ Poetry; and ‘Treatment of Nature in Jibanananda Das’ selected poems : An Eco-critical Study.

During the second session after lunch break, Md Maruf Hasan, Rabita Rahman, Md Saber E Montaha and Tanjila Rahman presented their discussions on Deconstructing Loneliness of Jibanananda Das’  Haye Chil; Poetics of Mythical Femininity in Jibanananda Das’ Poetry : An Ecofeminist Study of Female Representation; Temporality Veiled with Surrealism: A Study of Jibanananda Das’ Selected Poems; and Existential Crisis in Jibanananda Das: Focus on Dhushor Pandulipi and Banalata Sen.

The first Bangla session was presided over by Dr Ajfar Hossain, professor of English, World Literature and Interdisciplinary Studies, GCAS, New York while Asma Chowdhury and Mohammad Jasim Uddin presented two individual papers.

The second Bangla session was presided over by Dr Md Rezaul Islam (Shamim Reza), director of Bangabandhu Institute of Comparative Literature and Culture at Jahangirnagar University. In this session, Dr Farzana Siddika, Manju Rani Das, Shakila Alam and Sanjoy Kumar Sarkar also presented papers regarding various aspects on Jibanananda Das’ work and life.

The concluding session was addressed by Dr Md Rezaul Islam (Shamim Reza) and Md Arif Hosain, member of the conference preparatory committee presented a note of thanks.
