Reflections on Tagore with Anima Roy

Anima Roy has garnered a reputation for being a stellar contemporary Tagore exponent in recent years. Unlike many other current artistes, the singer wishes to remain steadfast in her career to uphold Tagore's legacy. On the Bard's 157th birth anniversary, the singer speaks to The Daily Star about the significance of his works, and more.

What significance do Tagore's compositions hold in your heart?

AR: I do not see them as a separate entity from myself, and I cannot imagine my existence without them. His songs echo in all the moments I've lived through, and shall for the years to come.

Which of his highlighted themes do you prefer?

AR: It would be wrong to think his songs are exclusive to a single theme. His songs are deeply rooted in nature, and nature is interwoven in all things. And that is why he is so celebrated and loved - his songs throb with life as we all know it, in our own way. His songs are so descriptive, the words alone paint a picture. I have equal preference of all songs, be it romantic, or prayer.

How is the philosophy contained in his songs applicable in our day to day lives?

AR: If it wasn't, I don't believe that his songs would continue to endure to this day. People listen to his songs to ponder on their own feelings and reflections, and even those who are not acquainted with his music find the same depth in his other works. Personally, listening to his songs each day fill me with inner peace.
