Jahura Sarkar: Palagaan and baul exponent is a treat to the ears

Thirty- five year- old Jahura Sarkar is a  palagaan artiste and baul singer who has won over many listeners in Jhenidah and 

neighbouring districts.

Her husband Siddique Shah is a constant support and  accompanies her on the tabla at her performances.

Inspired by her father Nur Ali Fakir, a Lalon devotee, she began to sing palagaan and Lalon songs at the age of 12. She has learnt many Lalon songs along with others. She has mastered around 300 songs of different noted palagaan and baul singers like Siraj Shah, Jalil Shah, Panju Shah and Pagla Kanai.

 She takes part in palagaan with noted singers Aruj Ali Bayati, Shariful Bayati, Akbar Saijee and Indian artistes Biren Das and Somen Baul.

Jahura performs in different parts of Bangladesh. She also does stage performances with renowned palagan singers in Dhaka, Habiganj, Gopalganj, Khulna, Jessore, Magura, Kushtia and Narail.

 Jahura makes a reasonable living. Her ambition is to become a well known singer like Momtaz and be a TV artiste.

Baul singer Aruj Ali compliments Jahura on her palagaan and baul songs. Abdus Salam president of Bangladesh Gonoshilpi Sangstha of Jhenidah said, “Jahura renders Lalon songs very well. Besides, she contests with veteran palagaan singer Shariful Islam and Aruj Ali through palagaan".
