Abdul Karim to be celebrated in Kolkata

Illustrious programme to mark the mystic's birth centenary

To celebrate the birth centenary of Baul Samrat Shah Abdul Karim, Kolkata-based music bands Dohar and Lopamudra Productions have organised a three-day programme titled “Sahaj Parab” at Nazrul Mancha, Kolkata.

Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma will inaugurate the event at 4pm on September 2. The santoor maestro will also perform at the event with Pandit Subhankar Banerjee on tabla. Balram Hazra will recite dhol while Bangladeshi artistes -- Jamal Uddin Hassan Banna and Senjuti Dey will present folk songs, composed by Shah Abdul Karim, on the opening day. The performance will start everyday at 4pm.

Vidushi Shubha Mudgal will perform santa bhajan and donha while Asim Sarkar will render kobigaan on the second day. Popular Bangladeshi band Joler Gaan will wrap up the second day's musical proceedings at the venue. Apart from paying their musical tribute to Shah Abdul Karim through performing the bard's songs, Joler Gaan will perform their popular songs at the event. 

Renowned qawwali duo Wadali Brothers will perform Sufi songs while Surojit Sen will perform kirtan on the concluding day. Bangladeshi artiste Anima Mukti will render folk songs on the day. The event will also include performances of folk dances and folk songs along with a display of folk arts of Bangladesh and West Bengal, India.
