Many happy returns to the dynamic mother-daughter duo

Ferdousi Majumdar, one of the towering figures in Bangladeshi theatre, has made a rich contribution to the country’s cultural sector. She is one of the leading figures of the neo-theatre movement which reshaped the country’s theatre scenario in independent Bangladesh. The celebrated actor was born on this day in 1943 in Barishal to a well-off Muslim family.

Ferdousi Majumdar’s brother Muneer Chowdhury introduced her to the world of theatre. Tragically, she lost her brother during the Liberation War. Together with her husband Ramendu Majumdar and friend Abdullah Al Mamun, she founded the troupe, Theatre. She has acted in numerous plays, tele-fictions, and films. She played key roles in many notable theatrical productions, including Payer Awaz Pawa Jaye, Kokilara, Macbeth, Meraj Fakirer Maa, and Baramkhana. She has also garnered fame as a director.

In recognition of her outstanding contribution to the arts, Ferdousi Majumdar was awarded the Ekushey Padak in 1998. Today also marks the birthday of her daughter, Tropa Majumdar, who has carved a space for herself with her remarkable work in theatre and television.
