A silver jubilee for Moushumi

In 1993, a fresh faced beauty made an indelible impression with her debut in “Keyamot Theke Keyamot”. Her stardom rose rapidly over the years, and today Moushumi stands as one of the biggest celebrities in the contemporary film industry, with a couple of National Film Awards to her name. This year the actor has stepped into the 25th year of her career, during which she has appeared in over 200 films. Moushumi's fan club honoured the artiste with celebrations held in Uttara, where she took some time aside for a brief interview with The Daily Star.

You have dedicated 25 years of your life for the Bangladesh film industry. How does it feel to be here today?

Moushumi: The past 25 years have flown by so quickly, it's hard to believe I am here today. I am truly honoured and exceptionally happy. However, I could not have done it all without the support of my colleagues in the industry, the journalists who have given me exposure, my family and husband who have always stood by me through all the ups and downs. I must especially thank Shahanoor Rahman Shahan, for taking the risk in casting me in what became my debut film. I can never be grateful enough to my fans, for it is their love and interest that has kept my career going. And lastly, all praise is for Allah who alone can make all things possible.

Standing here today, how do you look back on your first film?

Moushumi: You can never forget the spark that started it all. Even today, 25 years later people still hum along to the songs from “Keyamot Theke Keyamot”. Looking back, it's the film that brought me and Salman Shah into recognition, and it's the film that has become an example among romantic cinema in our country.

Salman Shah had been your friend since you were very young. Could you share with us that aspect of your lives?

Moushumi: Many from this generation are not aware of the friendship we shared since childhood. I was able to embark on my career with a lot of laughter and joy, by being able to work with my best friend. The casting process for my co-star had a period of uncertainty when I was first slated to appear alongside a well known actor, and then a model, before finally settling on Salman. I was very lucky indeed.

What have you taken away from all these years?

Moushumi: I love acting, and all the actors in the industry. I make sure to dedicate all my efforts and passion in every venture, because you cannot stay true to yourself and what you do otherwise. I would also say that I have never been misguided from my goals. The people who have encouraged and aided me during my early years, still stand by me today with their guidance.

Have there ever been moments where you felt tired and regretful?

Moushumi: Never. I am very satisfied with all that I have been through, because they've led me to my accomplishments. I never dwell on missed opportunities and have always been happy with what I have.

In your years of experience, do you feel that the film industry lacks an influx of actors?

Moushumi: I don't think so. There are many eager to act, but I would say that they have been less impressionable. As artistes, we work to exist in the minds and hearts of people, and that is what newcomers should work towards.

How do you perceive this generation of viewers?

Moushumi: I would say that the young audience today are extremely smart and critical. You cannot fool them, and it makes me enjoy my work even more.
