Sabnam Faria looking forward to 'Debi'

Sabnam Faria is a household name in Bangladesh, having appeared in many memorable roles in tele-fictions over the years. For the first time in her career, the actor is stepping out of her comfort zone by breaking into her first silver screen role in 'Debi', which has recently been certified uncut by the Censor Board. She talks about the experience of working on her first film, which will be released on October 19.

What are your expectations from Debi?

I have very high expectations, because the film is based on a novel by the legendary Humayun Ahmed. He was arguably the most beloved writer in the country, and the Misir Ali series is one of his most popular works. This movie stars award-winning actors, and with Jaya Ahsan as the lead, I have no doubts that Debi will do well.

You portray the character of Neelu in the movie. How old were you when you first read the book?

I was in the ninth grade when I first read the novel. I could have never imagined then that I'd bring Neelu to life on screen one day!

Was there a lot of pressure working in a film based on the work of such a great writer?

It was daunting, to say the least. Misir Ali, Himu, Rupa and Neelu are some of the favorite characters for most readers. It was quite nerve-wracking because you don't know if you are doing justice to the character, and if they will turn out the way people have already imagined them. But I do feel that I did the best that I could.

How much did you have to prepare for your role? Did you personally resonate with Neelu?

I put my heart and soul into this endeavour. Before moulding myself into the character, I re-read the novel to have a clear idea of what I had to do. I feel like Neelu and I are completely different personalities.

Tell us about your future plans.

I want to continue working in films, but I think I'll be selective with the roles that I do.  The film has to have a good script, director, and cast.
