I never want to play a Pakistani army character again: Shatabdi Wadud

Theatre, television and film actor Shatabdi Wadud is now a household name in the showbiz. He also won the National Film Award for his powerful acting in the movie “Guerrilla”. He is now passing hectic hours with TV plays and cinema. In this month of victory, his new film “Bapjaner Bioscope” is set to hit screens. The veteran artiste talked about Liberation War-based films and more in a recent conversation with The Daily Star. Excerpts:

What makes you choose Liberation War-based films?

Shatabdi Wadud: It's very satisfying as an artiste. As we the new generation did not witness the Liberation War, I wish to work more in the projects.

How many Liberation War-based films you have done?

Shatabdi Wadud: As many as four. First was “Meherjaan”, then “Guerrilla”, “Jibondhuli” and finally I'm doing another one.

Tell us about your recent Liberation War-based movie.

Shatabdi Wadud: It is titled “Bapjaner Bioscope”, directed by Riazul Rizu where I have played a Bioscope man. It was shot at char area in the River Jamuna. The movie will release in this month of victory.

You played two different characters in “Guerrilla”, didn't you?

Shatabdi Wadud: Yes, although some people may not have noticed it. One was of major and another a captain of the Pakistani army. I have since received many offers to play similar characters, but I refused those proposals. I never want to play a Pakistani army character again.

What are the films you're doing now?

Shatabdi Wadud: Tauquir Ahmed's “Aggaytanama”, then a commercial film “Choker Dekha”, directed by PA Kajol. Apart from this, I have signed two other commercial movies. I'll also play a negative role in the movie “Adi” under the direction of Tanim Rahman Angshu.

What kind of characters do you like playing most in films?

Shatabdi Wadud: I have a weakness about negative roles, because there is huge scope of showing your acting skill in those kinds of characters.

What are you up to when you don't have a packed schedule?

Shatabdi Wadud: I'm an ardent bookworm and movie buff. So, I love reading books and watching movies during my leisure. I also love cricket and due to this, sometimes I go to the gallery to enjoy the game.
