Winners and unforgettable moments of Emmy Awards 2018
Hollywood's biggest stars came together to honour the best in television at the Emmy Awards 2018, which was hosted by Michael Che and Colin Jost. It was a night of victory for HBO and Netflix, with each winning 23 Emmys this year. Game of Thrones won Best Drama, the biggest award of the night, as well as the most awards for any show with a total of nine wins. The Crown's Claire Foy won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. It was Foy's second nomination and first victory for playing Queen Elizabeth II on the Netflix royal family drama. She dedicated the award to her co-star Matt Smith and the show's new cast, since when The Crown returns for its third season, Foy and the rest of the principal cast will be replaced in order to portray older versions of the characters.
On the other hand, Amazon's The Marvelous Mrs Maisel won eight Emmy awards, including Best Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.
The Emmys opened with a song and dance that highlighted the show's diversity this year. Then, for the next hour or so, the Television Academy gave at least eight Emmys in a row to white artistes. Regina King finally broke the streak, winning Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or TV movie for her starring role in Netflix's Seven Seconds. She was the first person of colour to win at the event.
During the award ceremony, host Colin Jost took a moment before a commercial break to acknowledge the people in the Carolinas and Virginia who are recovering from Hurricane Florence. Jost went on to encourage viewers to donate to groups like the American Red Cross during the commercial break, adding that the charities also helped the devastation in Houston and Puerto Rico.
In a beautifully unexpected twist, one winner took his moment in the spotlight to get down on one knee. Glenn Weiss, who won the award for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special for The Oscars, proposed to his girlfriend during his speech, which prompted cheers from the audience. She joined him on stage where he pulled out a ring that he noted was the same one his father gave to his mother 67 years ago.
Some other winners from the key categories include Matthew Rhys (The Americans) for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, Thandie Newton (Westworld) for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, Jeff Daniels (Godless) for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie and Bill Hader (Barry) for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.
