The essence of victory

Leeton Bhuiya talks about his ongoing exhibition

“Banner of Victory” by Leeton Bhuiya began on Tuesday at Alliance Francaise de Dhaka. The unrest and instability that we are facing politically and socially is something of a recent phenomenon, says Leeton. “Since 1971, more than 7.5 crore men and women were united in their belief that they had to gain freedom. Now we have separate aims and different motives. We have more than two political parties. We are divided in many ways and face the future with confusion. Today, if we were united we could build our future with optimism,” says Leeton.

“Recently we have won fame in the cricket world. We have obtained this victory in bits and pieces. We had to search for these victories as they give us the impetus to go forward,” the artist added.

“In the '71' series we have people like national cricketers Mustafizur, Mushfiqur, Mashrafe and Shakib Al Hasan, as the strength  of the future of the nation,” he said.

“'Freedom at midnight' and 'Victory Day' are depictions of the unseen men and women fighting under a single banner,” adds Leeton.

“In I971 the nation was born -- it was a new nation born free from oppression and autocracy. It was free from violence, bloodshed, and massacre. The national flag announced the freedom of a nation, with hopes and aspiration to make the country a free nation. I would try to convey the need for people to unite again. I would do this for the sake of the martyrs and for the sake of those who have endured so much for the freedom.”

“In 1977, I went to Chittagong to visit a painting exhibition at the Art Gallery of Chittagong. I noticed the announcement for admission tests, and thus began my Bachelor's Degree there in 1983. I spent 20 years getting some finesse in other crafts, which gave me a knowledge of painting with raw colours,” concludes Leeton.
