Tagore remembered in Mymensingh

Remembering Rabindranath Tagore, Jatiya Rabindra Sangeet Sammilon Parishad Mymensingh unit organised a programme at Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin Auditorium on Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) campus on Saturday.

The programme, titled “Manobota and Sompriti Sommelon” included a grand musical show and a discussion on the bard's life and work.

Around 300 artistes of different institutions took part in the opening choruses composed by Tagore, Kazi Nazrul Islam and DL Roy, charming the audience. 

The artistes participated from Shishutirtho Anandadhani Sangeet Bidhyatan, Shishu Niketan, Cambridge Model School, KB High School and KB College and others. 

The group presentations were led by Md Mamunul Islam, a young talent of Tagore songs. 

The opening choruses included “Sankocher Bihobolota Nijere Opoman”, “Dhano Dhanya Pushpo Bhara”, “Durgom Giri Kantar Moru” and “Mora Ek Brinte Du'ti Kushum”. 

It was followed by a presentation by veteran Tagore artiste Mohiuzzaman Chowdhury. 

A huge colourful rally was also brought out on the campus marking the event.

Earlier, a discussion was held.

Prof Abul Kashem Md Fazlul Haque of Dhaka University, former vice-chancellor of Patuakhali Science and Technology University Prof Dr Syed Sakhawat Hossain, eminent Rabindra researcher and artiste Prof Dr ABM Nurul Anwar, and vice-chancellor of BAU Prof Dr Md Ali Akbar addressed the discussion, among others. President of the parishad's Mymensingh unit, Prof Dr Monjurul Alam presided while parishad's general secretary Sunil Chandra Pal delivered the welcome address.

The speakers said that recent threats from militant and fundamentalist elements can be combated by staying true to the ideals and thoughts of Tagore.

The speakers also emphasised the need to spread cultural activities at all educational levels to make for a creative nation with a positive outlook.
