Tagore-Nazrul death anniversaries observed in Mymensingh

Mesmerising performance of popular Tagore and Nazrul songs entertained a large audience gathered at the venue marking death celebrations of the two greatest bards of Bangla music - Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam.

Jatiya Rabindra Sangeet Sammilon Parishad Mymensingh unit organised the programme at Zila Shilpakala Academy auditorium on Thursday.

Mohiuzzaman Chowdhury and Bijon Chandra Mistri spellbound the audience during their one-hour performance. 

The students of Shishu-Tirtha Anandadhoni Sangeet Bidhyatan also performed on the occasion.

Earlier, a discussion on life and works of the bards was held.

Prof. Dr Md Afzal Hossain, vice-chancellor of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) was the chief guest while deputy commissioner of Mymensingh Mustakim Billah Faruqui was present as special guest. Prof Abul Kashem Md Fazlul Haque of Bengali Department of Dhaka University; eminent Tagore researcher and artiste Prof Dr ABM Nurul Anwar also spoke on the occasion with Prof Dr Md Monjurul Alam, president of the parishad, in the chair.

Meanwhile, Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University (JKKNIU) in Trishal also observed the 39th death anniversary of Nazrul on the campus on Thursday.

The day's programme included placing of floral wreaths and a discussion meeting.

JKKNIU vice-chancellor Prof Dr Mohit Ul Alam was the chief guest at the discussion. Among others- treasurer of the university Prof AMM Shamsur Rahman; chairman of Music Department Prof Dr Musharrat Shabnam; dean of Arts Faculty Prof Dr Md Mahbub Hossain, Prof Dr Md Nazrul Islam and Prof Dr Rafiqullah Khan of Dhaka University discussed on life and works of the poet.

Earlier, teachers, students and employees of the university, led by vice-chancellor, placed floral wreaths at the portrait of Nazrul. 

Later, the vice-chancellor distributed the Institute of Nazrul Studies Stipend among the seven brilliant students of honours level of different departments of JKKNIU.

Recalling great contributions of the two bards in Bengali literature, the speakers said, we are proud of them as they reached the literature to world height through their volume of works.“They are unparallel, ever green and ever memorable,” said the speakers adding that Bangla Literature has drawn the attention of world's people for its variations and creativity.
