Mother Language Day sculpture unveiled in NY

In observation of the International Mother Language Day, a sculpture was unveiled at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza in front of the United Nations Headquarters complex in New York, USA. 

Masud Bin Momen, Ambassador and Representative of the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the UN, inaugurated the sculpture. In his speech he said, “The sculpture of International Mother Language Day in front of the UN has brought about a rare glory for Bangla language and culture.”

Other distinguished guests of the event included Shamim Ahsan, Consulate General of Bangladesh to New York; Ekushey Award winner Jamaluddin Hossain; renowned journalist Nini Wahed, and designer of the sculpture Khurshid Selim. 

The programme commenced with the choral rendition of “Amar Bhai er Rokte Rangano Ekushey February” by Bangladeshi-American artistes. Renowned American guitarist Nikk Polumpo played the song on his guitar. Poet Johirul Islam recited poems on the theme of Ekushey. 

The sculpture, designed by Khurshid Selim and prepared by Mrinal Haque, will have a month long-stay at that place. The event also includes placing wreath at the sculpture in the early hours of February 21, and a two-day Ekushey Book Fair on February 27-28 at the heart of Jackson Heights.
