Veteran actor and media personality Aly Zaker and celebrated researcher-essayist Mofidul Hoque have been named recipients of the Shaheed Altaf Mahmud Padak this year.

The award, named after the late musician, cultural activist and martyred Freedom Fighter Altaf Mahmud, will be conferred by the Altaf Mahmud Foundation today (August 30), the day Mahmud was abducted by Pakistan army in 1971.

Shawon Mahmud, daughter of Altaf Mahmud and member secretary of Altaf Mahmud Foundation, said: “We are organising the programme at the Begum Sufia Kamal Auditorium of Bangladesh National Museum to recall Altaf Mahmud and present the Altaf Mahmud Padak.”

Altaf Mahmud was active in the country's major political struggles including the language movement and Liberation War. He composed the iconic language movement song “Amar Bhaiyer Rokte Rangano Ekushey February”. He was a member of Dhaka Crack Platoon and worked as a producer at the Shadhin Bangla Betar Kendra during the Liberation War.
